Curious circles of green, floating on the vast blue waters. This is enough to give birth to a curiosity that won’t be easily curbed. At first glance, Manipur’s Loktak lake is a mysterious, yet majestic sight.
“The lake is pristine, with cold, refreshing water and several different plants floating around. Indeed, I was wondering how many such beautiful natural phenomenon I have yet to witness”.
My trip to Manipur in 2018 was memorable, to say the least. Manipur is easy to navigate and has a special place in Northeast tourism. Manipur has many sites, which capture the hearts of anyone who sets their eyes on it! Loktak Lake with rings is one such site.
On my first day, I enjoyed a beautiful sunrise. Later on, I set out to explore one of the major attractions of Manipur – Loktak Lake. Loktak is the biggest freshwater lake in Manipur. However, it isn’t the only thing that makes it a must-visit place. Loktak Lake has many phumdis or landmasses that float on its waters. Some are big enough to hold a small tourist home. However, others are as small as a bunch of weeds floating around. But these large floating green circles are a sight to behold!
I set out in a small local boat to experience the beautiful lake. It felt small and insignificant compared to the expanse of the waters and the beautiful green phumdis. I didn’t even know of such a curious phenomenon ever before!
These green rings were clubbed into perfect circles for fishing and easy navigation. The phumdis can be negotiated into any form according to the local, indigenous people’s needs. It is lovely to see how the locals interact with nature in such a beautiful way!
The lake is pristine, with cold, refreshing water and several different plants floating around. Indeed, I was wondering how many such beautiful natural phenomenon I have yet to witness, how many things I have yet to explore. This was only the beginning of my Manipur journey!
As I watched the sunset on Loktak lake, I knew my journey in Manipur would change me. Manipur has such amazing sites in store for travelers that will make you rethink what you know about the world. Embrace it, Manipur has a lot to show and teach!
There are several ways to get to Loktak Lake. The lake is situated in Moirang town that is easy to access. Firstly, for people who prefer to travel by air, Imphal is the nearest airport. Moirang is an hour’s drive from there. There is no train station in Imphal, so you will have to take a train to Dimapur and then cover the rest of the journey by road. Imphal is well connected by roads, so finding buses won’t be difficult.
You can rent a self drive car or take a taxi from Moirang to reach the lake.
Loktak lake is a popular tourist attraction in Manipur. Finding accommodation won’t be hard. You can find hostels or hotels in Moirang, and there’s even a small tourist home situated in one of Lokatak’s phumdis.
The best time to visit Manipur is the winter season from October to March. The skies are clear and the climate is very pleasant during this time.
