Miami is known as the quintessential vacation destination, and there is no doubt as to why; endless white-sand beaches, signature stores, a chic atmosphere and the most vibrant nightlife can all certainly make anyone’s holiday unforgettable. Now, there’s another side of Miami that the standard traveller probably doesn’t know about and that they definitely should.
Although most tourists head to this sought-after city craving for beach, sun, and sand, they all should know there’s an unexpected and unique experience waiting for you if you’re up for it. Miami adventures involving wild animals, motocross, camping, beaches; they all coexist in Miami, and are there for the taking!
If you are an adrenaline junkie visiting Miami on your next vacation, or if you just enjoy reading about amazing places to visit, this post is for you.
It is important to know that if you want to visit more than one place in a day (believe me, you’ll want to) I highly recommend hiring a car in Miami as it will relieve all the unnecessary stress of using public transport and it will actually be good for your wallet. Personally, I found driving around Miami to be a little challenging at first, but once I got used to the traffic I am so glad I had a car to help get around! And as a bonus; there’s valet parking almost everywhere!
Here are some of the craziest and most adventurous activities around Miami for you to enjoy with you family and friends.
The Everglades National Park is one of the most unique and wild attractions in Miami, hosting about 1.5 million acres of subtropical wetlands, you can bike, boat, hike, trek, camp and even get in contact with a very fearsome species (you know I am talking about the alligator). You can head to the Miccosukee Indian Village, Everglades Alligator Farm or the Everglades Safari Park to get up close with these sharp-toothed locals.
If you are into dirt, speed and adrenaline, you must visit Miami Motocross Park. West of the big city in Hialeah, visitors can rent dirt bikes and tear it up on jumps in a big repurposed mining pit. This incredible site has a hard-packed track and it offers full gear rental for visitors. The park is located off Krome Avenue, the main route through South Florida’s agricultural belt. You can take your kids as the park even offers lessons for the little ones!
If you ever thought of joining the circus, this is your shot! This is now considered one of Florida’s coolest activities where you can experience a new way of flying and jumping thanks to the Trapeze School. Here you can learn how to swing and do a backflip plus the most exciting, thrilling, and scary activities that you could try, but don’t worry, you’ll be safe with certified instructors! The school offer classes to all ages from 6 years old to 81 years old so you can take your whole family if you want them to fly to!
There’s a lot more than just “going to the beach” in Miami. Have you ever thought of all the exciting things you can do with a little water and some sportswear? Well… actually, a lot! At Thriller Miami Speedboat Adventure, for example, you can take a speed boat that will take you on a ride around South Beach plus the ritzy homes, some of them owned by celebrities, on Fisher and Star islands. You can also climb onto a Yamaha wave runner and catch glimpses of friendly dolphins as you ski past Bayside Marketplace, the Port of Miami and the iconic Star Island with Jet Ski Tours of Miami. If you are a little less extreme, Oleta River State Park in North Miami Beach gives you the chance of swimming, paddling, hiking and fishing!
This may sound a little too extreme for some but for others, if we are talking about adventure, this makes the list. Believe it or not, there’s a place in Wynwood where you can fire automatic weapons in a shooting range. Both legal and safe. You can visit Lock & Load, a premier experience and state-of-the-art shooting range with 14,000-square foot facility with 24 firing lanes and 25 different varieties of firearms to choose from! Get one-on-one professional guidance as you fire away in a safe and controlled environment.
If you thought sailing to The Bahamas and back in one day was impossible, you were wrong… Miami makes it possible! Resorts World Bimini’s Super-Fast ship takes you to Bimini, 50 miles east of Miami in a blink of an eye. In just a couple of hours, you’ll be lying in the white sand beaches of this legendary Bahamian island. Known as Ernest Hemingway’s favourite escape and where Martin Luther King Jr. retreated to write his “I Have a Dream” speech.
As you can see, there are plenty of unexpected adventurous things to do in Miami apart from just going to the beach or clubbing. Remember to rent a car so your journey gets a lot easier and start exploring all the marvels Miami has to offer.
