Panch Badri are 5 dhams of Lord Vishnu like Panch Kedar of Lord Shiva. It includes Badrinath, Bhavishya Badri, Yogdhyan Badri, Vridh Badri, and Adi Badri. Originally, there were seven Badri temples but five of them make up for the complete Panch Badri circuit.

Panch Badri Yatra is an important pilgrimage tour for the followers of Hinduism. Badrinath Dham is one of the Panch Badri. These temples have idols of different forms of Lord Vishnu. These five temples lie between the area of Badrinath Dham and Nandprayag.

Panch Badri Yatra complements the Chhota char Dham pilgrimage tour. These temples are part of Badri-Kedar Dham. Although some of these places remain open for visitors throughout the year, the rest have the same tradition of opening and closing the doors as the Chardham. Panch Badri Pilgrimage Circuit

The five prominent Vishnu Temples of Panch Badri are very significant for Vaishnavites. Here are some important details before you embark on this spiritual voyage.

1. Badrinath

Badrinath Temple is situated at an altitude of 3133 meters between Nar and Narayan hills in the Himalayan ranges of Chamoli district. Although the texts in Hindu scriptures mention Badrinath Temple, Adi Guru Shankaracharya established the present-day temple in the eighth century. The structure of the temple got devastated due to the earthquake and was later renovated. The other moniker of Badrinath Dham is Baikunth of Lord Vishnu.

Lord Vishnu did penance at this site as the incarnation of Nar and Narayan. Badrinath is one of the Char Dham temples in India. As per ancient tradition, the descendants of Namboodiripad Brahmins perform puja at Badri Vishal Mandir. The Rawal who performs puja has to stay bachelor as long as he is performing rituals at the temple. He has to step down from the position of Rawal as soon as he gets married.

Places to Visit: Bheem Shila, Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa, Mana Village (The last village of India on the India-China border, and Vasudhara Falls are the places to visit around Badrinath.

How to Reach Badrinath: Badrinath has good road connectivity to Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun. Regular buses and taxis ply from these places to Badrinath. Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun are important railheads. Jolly Grant at Dehradun is the nearest airport.

 

2. Yogdhyan Badri

Yogdhyan Badri is situated at Pandukeshwar near Govind Ghat on the bank of river Alaknanda in Chamoli district at an elevation of 1920 meters. It is believed to be the birthplace of the Pandavas. Pandu, the father of Pandavas installed the idol here. The meditation posture of the Vishnu idol has given it the name Yogdhyan Badri. The suffix 'Badri is added to the holy temples of Vishnu because one had to pass through the Badri van (Forest of berries) to get to the temples.

Places to Visit: Charanpaduka, Saraswati River, Satopanth Tal trek, and Joshimath are the places to visit around Yogdhyan Badri.

Darshan Timings: 05:00 am to 12:00 pm and 02:00 pm to 09:00 pm

How to Reach Yogdhyan Badri: Yoga Dhyan Badri is 23 kilometers from Badrinath and 18 kilometers from Joshimath. Board a bus or hire a taxi from Rishikesh, Haridwar, or Dehradun.

3. Bhavishya Badri

Bhavishya Badri is located in Subhai village near Joshimath in Chamoli district at an altitude of 2744 meters. Adi Guru Shankaracharya built this temple in dense forests. Here, Lord Vishnu is worshipped in the Narasimha form.

First, reach Joshimath, take a bus or taxi to get to Saldhar, which is 11 kilometers from Joshimath. Saldhar onward, one has to trek for 6 kilometers and climb the mountains on foot.

Places to Visit: Nanda Devi National Park, Tapovan, Narsingh Temple, and Auli are the places to visit around Bhavishya Badri.

Darshan Timings: 09:00 am to 05:00 pm. The temple remains open all the time on Saturdays.

Abhishek Puja: 04:30 am to 06:30 am

Astotari Puja: Between 06:00 pm to 09:00 pm

Chandi Aarti: Between 06:00 pm to 09:00 pm

Opening and Closing Months: Open between May and November. This temple closes after the closing of Badrinath Dham.

Best Time to Visit: March to May and September to November

How to Reach Bhavishya Badri: First, reach Joshimath, take a bus or taxi to get to Saldhar, which is 11 kilometers from Joshimath. Saldhar onward, one has to trek for 6 kilometers and climb the mountains on foot. Joshimath has good road connectivity with Rishikesh, Hardwar, Dehradun, and Jolly Grant airport.

 

4. Vriddha Badri

Vriddha Badri Temple is situated at a distance of 7 km from Joshimath at Animath village. Lord Vishnu is worshiped in the form of an old man. It is believed that Narad Muni did penance to please Lord Vishnu at this place. Lord Vishnu appeared and blessed him in the form of an old man. The temple is open throughout the year.

Places to Visit: Gorso Bugyal, Valley of Flowers, Narsingh Temple, Shiv Mandir, and Auli are the places to visit around Vriddha Badri

How to Reach Vriddha Badri: Pilgrims can easily reach Vriddha Badri from Joshimath, which is 7 kilometers from the temple site. Joshimath has good road connectivity with Rishikesh, Hardwar, Dehradun, and Jolly Grant airport.

 

5. Adi Badri

Adi Badri is a group of 16 temples at the confluence of Pandal and Alaknanda river in the Chamoli district. It is 17 kilometers from Karnprayag. As per prevalent legend, the Pandavas built these temples when they were going to heaven. After the dilapidation of 2 temples, only 14 temples are left at the site.

Lord Vishnu is the main temple where the idol is made of black-colored stone. These temples exhibit Katyuri style architecture. Brahmins from South India are the chief pujaris in the temple.

Places to Visit: Uma Devi Temple, Karna Temple, Nauti Village, Nand Prayag, and Chandika Devi Temple are the places to visit around Adi Badri.

Darshan Timings: 06:00 am to 07:00 pm

Opening and Closing Months: The temple opens for darshan on Makar Sankranti in January every year and closes in November.

Best Time to Visit: February to November

How to Reach Adi Badri: Adi Badri temple is close to Karnaprayag, which is 19 kilometers from the temple site. Karnaprayag has road connectivity with Ranikhet, Rishikesh, Hardwar, Ramnagar, and Dehradun.
