Swiss Museum of Transport Lucerne – Verkershaus Luzern

The Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne is for me, the best family museum in Switzerland. It is also the most visited museum in the country, all about transport and mobility is represented here. It is located in a privileged and central point, near Lake Lucerne. Since its inauguration for 60 years, it has received more than 30 million visitors.

The museum has different exhibitions: trains, cars, and motorcycles, maritime navigation and tourism, aviation, and space. Planetarium, Cinema with 500 m2 screen, Swiss Chocolate Adventure by Lindt and Media World, for these attractions we need it an additional ticket.

What’s best for kids here?

Basically, all areas of the Museum have attractions that entertain children and adults! Here, I prepared a summary of the best attractions of the different areas of the museum of Transport in Lucerne.

Events and specials

In 2018 and 2019, the museum is focused on a special exhibition called “Switzerland in the Air,” which brings simulators, new objects, and other surprises. The airline Swiss also brings new things in exhibition Hall.

The National Circus Knie is celebrating 100 years in 2019, is also one of the special exhibitions of this year (at Trains Hall). Since June 2018, 1 original fighter plane of the Swiss Army is part of the exhibition. Update: new in 2019 Rega Helicopter! Access to the museum Hans Erni is included in the entrance; the museum is just behind the Arena.

At the Arena, we can see an original airplane Douglas DC-3 and a Conair CV-990 Coronado, originals of Swissair, today Swiss. Playground with mini airplanes, construction area, TCS Kart, Model Train is also part of the Arena.

Honestly, it is hard to find time to see everything! The best to take a map at the entrance and choose two or three areas and let the kids have fun! Plan one day, if possible.

Lindt Swiss Chocolate Adventure

One of the attractions of the Transport Museum in Lucerne is the Lindt Swiss Chocolate Adventure. Lindt is the most famous chocolate brand in the world; here, I share with you how my experience was at the Swiss Chocolate Adventure.

Cocoa Path from Ghana to Switzerland

You enter a cart that slides between several rooms with screens; between the rooms, the lights go out, and we have the impression of being in a cinema. In the beginning, we can see some of Lindt’s production in Zurich.

After we discovered the history of cocoa from the Aztecs, the first people of the world to learn and use the fruit of cocoa. They consumed the cocoa in the form of a drink without sugar, which was called “liquid of the Gods.” Then the secrets of cocoa itself, with images of the preparation, drying, and fermentation of grains in Ghana, Africa. The country is the leading supplier of cocoa from Lindt and the world’s largest producer of cocoa. An impressive amount of cocoa that they export!!

Arriving in Switzerland, cocoa will be transformed into chocolate, and during this process, cocoa conching happens. A shell-shaped machine moves the chocolate in and out, at a temperature of +-35 degrees, releases the odor of the chocolate, decreases the initial bitterness of cocoa, and makes the chocolate texture much better. This process of conching was invented and developed by Rudolf Lindt in 1880. Lindt is keen to emphasize that the quality of its chocolate is also partly due to the taste of alpine milk and the Swiss ingredients added to cocoa.

The history of Swiss Chocolate

The precursor was François-Luis Cailler, the founder of Nestlé. After graduating in Italy as Cioccolatieri, he opened in Vevey, in 1819, the first manufacturer of Swiss Chocolate.
It paved the way for others such as Phillip Suchard, Rudolf Sprüngli (Rudolf’s father), Jean Tobler (chocolate Toblerone), and many others.

The Grand Finale we are invited to do a Chocolate tasting at the Lindt store.

I expected more from the Lindt Swiss Chocolate Adventure! The ticket price is the same as the other Swiss Chocolate Experiences with a considerable structure for kids. But if you are passing through Switzerland and do not have time to visit any chocolate factory, in this case, it may be worthwhile. The children will probably be happy to have a Lindt chocolate experience.
