Jodhpur – The Sun city or Blue City located in the Rajasthan State of India that takes away the rejoice of all the travellers. As everyone knows Rajasthan is famous for its rich heritage, Palaces, Forts, unique culture, bustling cities and shopping, Jodhpur is also not exceptional. In fact, it is the 2nd largest city of Rajasthan and 10th most popular tourist destination in the world. Yes you hear it Right!!!!

Here is my pick for the Top 10 Places to visit in Jodhpur in two days:

Day 1 :

1.Visit to Mehran Fort

The most exquisite site in Jodhpur, the Mehrangarh fort is ‘must visit’ place in Jodhpur.. It is one of the largest fort in India built by Rao Jodha stands on perpendicular Cliff in Jodhpur city. It is the most impressive architecture in India. At the entrance of the Fort there is Chhatri (cenotaphs) of Kirat Singh Soda, a soldier who fell on the spot defending the Mehrangarh fort.

There are total 7 gates and a museum inside the Mehrangarh fort. There are Royal rooms, paintings and Palanquins used for transportation of Royal ladies, Phool Mahal, Shish Mahal and lot of Balconies. My favourite were Phool Mahal and Shish Mahal. The ceiling are in gold filigree and mirror, with its delicate colors, golden sheen, stained glass windows and screens; it is undoubtedly the grandest room in Mehrangarh fort.

After exploring the fort, take a walk through Chamunda Devi temple beside the fort complex where you can have a panoramic view of the Jodhpur City and one cannot take eyes off from it. You can get the idea why it is known as the Blue city.

Fort VisitTimings: 9.00 am to 5.00 am

Entry Fees: INR 100/Person for Indian nationals and INR 600/person for foreign nationals including audio Guide.

Rahee’s suggestion: wake up early and enter the fort by 9.00 am to beat the crowd. Entire fort complex exploration will take approx. 3 hours. Prefer to stay near Clock tower area which is just walking distance from Mehrangarh fort complex.

2. Pass by Jaswant Thada

After exploring fort complex, stop at Jaswant Thada which is cenotaph of King Jaswant Singh built by his son King Sardar Singh. It is made with intricately carved sheets of marble and displays portraits of the rulers and Maharajas of Jodhpur.

Beside the memorial, there is lake and garden and one can find peace and serenity in the bustling city. Beside the monument, there is Rao Jodha National Park which is paradise for bird watchers.

3. Savour Delicious Makhaniya Lassi at Mishrilal Hotel

Rajasthan is famous for its sweet dishes and trip to Jodhpur is incomplete without testing Makhaniya Lassi at Mishrilal located at famous clock tower area. This shop is recognized by all World Guide Publication (Lonely Planet) and running since 1927.It is one of the must do things to do in Jodhpur.

Sweet Lassi is made with curd, sugar, saffron, cream and topping with some butter. This drink is famous with Punjabi Community in India as well.

4.Satiate your taste buds at Janta Sweet Home

India is famous for its street food and Jodhpur is a part of it. The Janta Sweet home offers sweet and snacks but one must try its famous Jodhpuri Mirchi vada and pyaazz kachori here. But mouth-watering snacks is incomplete without some sweets, try Ghevar , one of famous Rajasthani sweet.

Travel tips: Plate of Mirchi Vada and Kachori will cost you INR 40 and 100 gms of Ghevar can cost you INR 45.

5.Admire the Night View of MehranGarh Fort.

This is one of the Top thing to do in Jodhpur at night. In evening, you can stroll near clock tower area and can admire the night view of mighty Mehrangarh fort from any of terrace restaurant in clock tower area or just you can admire the view from Clock Tower. It is worth to visit once.

Day 2:

1.Start your Day with Exploring Umaid Bhavan Palace.

Another grand palace of Rajasthan, which is world’s largest private residence named after the King Umaid Singh set in area of 26 acres is . The Palace is divided into three parts – the residence of the royal family, and a Museum focusing on the 20th century history of the Jodhpur Royal Family and luxurious Taj hotel. The palace is magnificent in its lavish proportions with Durbar Hall for meeting people, exclusive meeting Hall, dining hall, a ball room, library and paintings along passages.

2.Skip the tourist Circuit and Go Offbeat to Visit Mandore Garden.

Mandore is located approx 9 km from Jodhpur city centre and it is marvel of architecture and art and you should include it in your list of nearby Places to visit around Jodhpur. It was the capital of Marwar before the foundation of Jodhpur.It also remained the crematorium of the royal house of Jodhpur and Cenotaphs of all important rulers can be seen here. It also has collections of temples, memorials and major attraction here is Chhatri of King Ajit Singh.

Rahee’s Suggestion: If you are using public transportation, it will cost you INR Rs 100 by auto/Rs 10 by public bus to reach here from Jodhpur city centre.

3.Visit to Toorji Ka Jhalara

Toorji Ka Jhalara is located near Laykan Maholla area near the Clock tower. It is a steepwell said to as be old as 6th Century AD. Before 1996, steep wells were source of water for Jodhpur locals. I always wanted to see steep well, and it was my first one. I loved the architecture and steps here.This stepwell is one of the Places of interest in Jodhpur.

4.Try Tasty Rajasthani Thali.

I am Foodie by nature and I love to eat local dishes. The trip to Jodhpur remains incomplete without eating famous Rajasthani thali. You can try the Thali at famous Gypsy restaurant in Sardarpura area.

And if you are craving for good Indian food during your stay at Jodhpur, eat the Dhosa,Puri Sabji and Paratha etc at Priya Restaurant at Nai sadak area (Sojti gate , just opposite of Janta Sweet Home)

Travel Tips: 1 plate of Thali at Gypsy restaurant will cost you INR 200 approx.

And eating at Priya restaurant may cost you approx. INR 100-150/Person for lunch or dinner.

Rahee’s Suggestion: I loved all the dishes at Priya Restaurant very much, especially Dhosas and Puri Bhaji.

5.Shopping in the local Markets.

Any trip is incomplete without doing shopping, especially for girls. Visit local handicraft market and Bazaars near Clock Tower Area. Here you can buy everything from shoes,handicraft items,bangles,bags, clothes and one can enjoy the local market feel as it is so colorful.

Rahee’s Suggestion: Go for shopping at Nai Sadak area shops which starts from Sojti Gate to road leading to Clock Tower. There is National Handloom Corporation beside the Janta Sweet Home where you can purchase the stuffs at fixed price.

I bought beautiful handicraft Bag from Blue Bohemians shop which is just right of Clock tower Gate.

6.That Blue House Hunting

If still you are craving for some more, find that blue houses for some memories of your trip. You can easily find the blue hues and blue painted houses in old town area or head to Navchokiya where you can capture the colours which will take you back in ancient era.As the name suggests Blue City- this seems one of interesting Places to visit in Jodhpur.

Accomodation:

We had stayed at Gauri Heritage Haveli, guest house near clock tower, centrally located from all the sightseeing attractions. One can easily walk to Mehran garh fort and can reach to other attractions by auto/bus.

Cost: It can cost you approx INR 990/night for 2 people.

Local Transportation:

Public Transportation is good option for visiting sightseeing places if you are on budget, otherwise one can hire a Taxi for local sightseeing.

Rahee’s Total Cost:

This trip from my hometown to Jodhpur cost me INR 3200/Person including accommodation, food and transportation to and fro from my Home. We preferred to walk a lot and it was also the best experience to explore the city by foot.

Day Trips:

If you have more time, you can take a Day trip to Osian village (66-70 km) which is known as ‘Khajuraho of Rajasthan’ and famous for its Jain Temples. You can also stay in Desert Camp and can enjoy the sand dunes here in Thar Desert.

P.s Prices are as on January-2017 during my visit.This was my perfect 2 day Jodhpur itinerary to experience best of the city.

Imagine – lush green hills with floating clouds, serpentine roads dotted with coffee plants on both the sides with green & red coffee berries, Cauvery flowing across the wilderness and sun setting at verdant valley. This is the Coorg aka Kodugu and “Scotland of India” for me.

Coorg(Kodagu) is a district in Karnataka state of India; located at an altitude of 5627 ft on the slopes of western ghats. It is located 270 Kms from Banglore and 140 Kms from Manglore. Due to rolling hills,breathtaking scenery,perfect weather and its colonial charm- it is most popular as ‘Scotland of India‘. There are many things to do in Coorg and Lot many Places to explore in Coorg; 3 days are not enough to visit this hill station.

The district is divided in small towns of Madikeri, Virajpet, Somwarpet, Kushalnagar etc. The best part about this tiny hill station is that it offers everything from nature, wildlife, culture to colors. It’s a perfect place for spending time away from urban jungle of cities.

About 45 kms. from Madikeri, nestled in Brahamagiri Hills of Coorg, Talacauvery is believed to be the origin of river Kaveri (Cauvery). It has a temple dedicated to goddess cauvery and is among a prominent place of worship for local kodava people. A tank constructed by kodavas on the hillside happens to be the origin of river Kaveri. As it is located at a height of 1276 meters; it gives a panoramic view of surrounding Brahmagiri hills and the valley.

Bhagamandala:

Located 8 Kms from Talacauvery , Bhagamandala is popularly known as Triveni Sangam where river Cauvery is meets by river kannike and tributary sujyothi. It is a place of religious importance, as taking a dip into the holy waters of triveni sangam is considered sacred. At short distance from triveni sangam, there is a temple of Shri Bhagandeshwara temple. The temple houses idols of lord Bhagandeshwara(Ishwara), Subramanya and Ganpati. It is a place of religious importance for Kodavas.

Abbey falls is located 8 kms from Madikeri in the western ghats. It is early reaches of Kaveri and surrounded by blanket of lush greenery. To reach the waterfall, one needs to drive up to the entrance and then to cover short distance on foot. It is located between spice and coffee plantation;
Abbey Falls sparkles as a stream of white pearls running down a green wall. The cascaded waterfall gushing down from 70 ft height, joins the river Cauvery. In monsoon, the waterfall’s volume increases and it becomes a sight to behold.It is one of the best places to visit in Coorg in your 3 days itinerary.

Raja’s Tomb:

Raja’s Tomb(Gaddige) is located 1.5 Kms from Madikeri on hilltop.The monument depicts the mortal remains of the royal Kodavas. There are three tombs built in Islamic style and Nandi figures carved on the top corners. Lord Shiva is placed and worshiped inside the tomb since the king was Hindu. This is a very fascinating fact because most of the tombs belong to Muslim kings and dynasties. Apart from amazing architecture of it, the place gives mesmerizing view of Madikeri town. It is a good place for viewing the sunset too.

Raja’s Seat:

Raja’s seat is located in the center of Madikeri town. Raja’s Seat means ‘Seat of Kings’.It is brick and mortar structure with four pillars where Kings of Coorg used to watch glorious sunset. It is a popular sunset point among tourists. The district administration has put up a toy train near the Raja’s Seat as an attraction to kids.

There is a beautiful garden around the place and during my visit there was flower show with different art representation. This place offers breathtaking views of surrounding green valleys, towering hills and studded paddy fields below.

Madikeri Fort:

Madikeri fort located in the middle of the town, was built in the last quarter of 17th century by Muddu Raja and had a Palace built inside it. It has seen many battles and thus representing a rich historical and cultural background. The fort has been re-build and renovated at times across these years.

Now a days it serves as office of Madikeri Deputy Commissioner. The fort is unique in a way that it houses temple, an angican church, a prison and a museum inside its walls. The church has been converted into a museum and offers visitors varied kinds of antiques related to Coorg.

Though the structures are not much admirable, it offers 360 degree view of surrounding hills and Madikeri town.

Omkareshwar Temple:

As you take an exit on the road ending to Madikeri fort, cross the road and go down the street to reach to the Omkareshwar temple. The temple is dedicated to lord shiva and it was built by King Lingrajendra II in 19th century.The architecture is unique and built in Gothic and Islamic style. It is worth visiting as you can see so many religious ceremonies and marriage rituals in temple complex.

Dubare Elephant Camp:

If you are an animal lover, Coorg has so many places to enjoy wildlife and one such place is Dubare Elephant Camp. Personally, I don’t like visiting such places where wild animals are involved.But later I came to know that Dubare elephant camp provides visitors a warm experience with elephants. At Dubare, one can spend hours watching Elephants and knowing about them. If your timings are right, you can even participate in bathing and scrubbing of the elephants. It is a unique initiative in ecotourism.

Unfortunately, when I visited it was closed due to public holiday. But the place is located at the scenic banks of river Cauvery and I could enjoy the rejuvenating nature.

Kaveri Nisargdhama:

If you are travelling from Madikeri to Kushalnagar, you can visit kaveri nisargdhama on the way. It is a small island formed by river cauvery. It presents alluring natural setting where on can admire gloriously flowing river cauvery passing through dense forest.It is a good spot to interact with nature; you can reach to forest by crossing hanging bridge over the river. There is a small entry fee of Rs.15 to enter the Park.

It has a deer park, rabbit park and children play area inside as well. Though it is like touristy spot; the views from the hanging bride are breathtaking. The Park remains open from 9 AM to 5 PM daily.

Namdroling Monastery:

At a distance of 40 Kms from Madikeri near Kushalnagar – there is a town named Bylakuppe which is one of the largest Tibetan settlement in South India and second largest in the world outside Tibet. This little colorful town with large Tibetan refugees is home to several monasteries with the Namdroling Monastery being a major attraction.

Golden Temple

The Namdroling monastery is the largest teaching center of Nynigma lineage of tibetan buddhism in the world.It is home to 5000 monks and nuns with collage and hospital. Inside the campus you can see the gardens,monastery and golden temple.Popularly known as Golden Temple, the monastery is picture of grandeur and colors.

The temple is very impressive with colorfully painted walls, murals adorn the walls about Tibetan mythology and it creates perfect backdrop for tall golden Buddha statues.

Apart from monastery, you can stop at small cafes in the campus which serves yummy thupkas and momos. There are several small shops which sells tibetan prayer flags,handicrafts,shawls,prayer bells and other knick knacks. You can buy souvenirs from here. This should be one the things to do in coorg as part your 3 days Coorg itinerary.

Trip to Coorg is incomplete without visiting and capturing beautiful moments spent at Coffee and Spice plantation.I am so much fascinated by the world of coffee and sole purpose of my trip to Coorg was visiting the coffee and spice plantation. Coorg has hundrends of acres of Coffee and spice Plantation growing both Arabica and Robusta coffee.

As you take walk into the plantation, you can see tall oak trees which provides shades to the coffee plants. And owners of plantation grows Pepper plants creeping to taller oak trees.This way they gets good yield of Pepper too. Apart from it, Coorg’s climate is ideal to grow other spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves etc.

There are so many Coffee plantations are available in Coorg; however I would suggest to stay for a night at home stay with plantation. Most of the home stays in Coorg owns their own coffee plantation. Plantation walk,berry picking,coffee brewing are some of the best things to do in Coorg.

This was My perfect itinerary to visit Coorg in 3 days.

How to Reach Coorg:

Coorg is well connected by air and road from major cities like Bangalore,Mysore and Manglore of Karnataka. Nearest airport is Bangalore and Manglore. If you are arriving to Mysore OR Bangalore airport, there is a direct AC Volvo FLYBUS to Coorg from Bangalore airport itself in evening. You can book it through KSRTC.Also KSRTC has good network of Local buses to Coorg. Bangalore to Coorg Road is in excellent Condition hence Coorg is Popular weekend gateway from Bangalore.

Getting around Coorg:

Coorg is small hill station with good roads. You can get around by hiring taxi and bikes. If you are travelling on budget, you can roam around by local buses but check the timings of buses. We hired Bike for 3 days from Royal Brothers in Coorg. It is a good option to get around with a bit of adventure.

Best Time to Visit Coorg:

Coorg can be visited throughout the year with temperature ranges from 15 degree to 25 degree Celsius.However Oct-March is best time to visit Coorg due to clear sky and warm weather. During March-April temperature can be bit more but valley shrouded with white coffee flowers and is good time to Visit Coorg.

Where to Stay in Coorg:

There are so many best Places to stay in Coorg plus now a days plantation owners are welcoming visitors to stay at their Home stays. I highly recommend to stay at Home stays depending upon your budget.You can experience authentic Kodava hospitality and their rich culture. Apart from it, there are plenty of resorts and hotels in Madikeri and nearby areas who love luxurious stay.

As there are few sights located away from Madikeri, I recommend staying 2 days in Madikeri and remaining 1-2 days in coffee Plantation. This way you can save travel time and you can cover the most of the places in ample time.

Where to Eat in Coorg:

Coorg is famous for its cuisines. I would recommend visiting local restaurants UDUPI Garden,Neel Sagar and small eateries for pure vegetarian south Indian dishes. I had one of the best Dhosa and Idlis of my life here at home stay I stayed at Madikeri; don’t forget to eat at your heart’s content with Coorg Cooffee.

What to Buy in Coorg:

As Coorg is famous for its Coffee and Spices; you can purchase roasted coffee beans, coffee powder and spices. There are many spice malls and shops in the town. Also take a note cinnamon,pepper and cloves are locally grown here, other spices are imported from nearby states. I recommend buying roasted Coffee beans at Ganesh Coffee which is one of the oldest and recommended by locals.

Having said, 3 days are not enough to give justice to this Place, I would love to visit it again. If you like my Post, Pin it !!
