Overview

Tegallalang rice fields, locally known as subak, lies in the center of Bali and depicts the traditional Balinese irrigation system. The paddy fields are famous for their terraced layout as it offers a scenic view of the rice fields and surrounding green landscape. The unique irrigation system is believed to be passed down by a holy man named- Rsi Markandeya in the 8th century. Tegallalang contributes to 3 most beautiful terraced landscapes in the regions of Ubud, Pejeng and Campuhan. The landscape offers you a cool and breezy vibes in the scorching heat of Bali, moreover it’s an amazing location to click pictures.

To witness the greenery of the fields, the months of March, April, September and October are the most suitable ones as it is the time of harvest. From April to September, the fields have a tint of a yellow color, it is a different of beauty to witness. Dawn is the best time of the day to witness the beauty of agriculture, as the sun rays are not too direct to bake you. It is also a perfect time for photography as the light is evenly spread out on the fields and also there is not much tourists at that time.

On the way to the fields, there are various cafes and restaurants. One of the famous restaurants is Terrace Padi, from where you can overlook the terraces and is next to the ‘Love Bali’ sign. It serves traditional Indonesian and Balinese food with some traditional dishes as well. The location of the restaurant is picturesque and would be a nice stop for a drink and enjoy the tranquil scenery. On the way there are various cafes but inside the rice fields there are none. So you should always carry your own water and snacks along.

There are many tours that include Tegallalang Rice fields as a stop, some of the tours are- KINTAMANI VOLCANO and TEGALLALANG  RICE TERRACE TOUR (Price: $ 50) and UBUD and TEGALLALANG  RICE TERRACE TOUR (Price: $ 50).
Instead of the tours, one can also hire a motorbike as it is not that difficult to navigate.

Nice and pleasant place to see the traditional rice gardens, swings and bike rides. Dress casually and wear proper shoes to explore the place. Based on weather, you might feel exhausted at times so drink lots of coconuts water

This was a lovely calm and scenic outing, it was very relaxing to meander through the rice fields. We paid to go with a guide, I would suggest doing this as it not only supports the local community but he added valuable insight into the places we saw. The Bali Swings are one of the big tourist attractions at the Tegallalang Rice Terrace's, we opted for the cheapest option and really enjoyed it. This spot had some wonderful photo opportunities too so bring your cameras! I suggest also bringing sunscreen, a hat, water and snacks, as it can be a long hot day.

It was very relaxing to see the rice field here. You can explore the area or enjoy a snacks & drinks at the cafe around here. A bit unfortunate because some decorations make it less authentic and natural. But still lovely. The location is not to far from Ubud

Highly recommend a visit here when visiting Bali/Ubud. If you come here without a tour guide, make an effort to come early in the morning or later afternoon so that you can have a pleasant visit without being too hot. There are lots of tourist things you can do like bike riding in the sky and swinging. You can also just take a lovely stroll through the rice terraces. It's very serene and calming.
