Sri Bhadrakali Temple

Bhadrakali temple is dedicated to Goddess Uma. Hindu Goddess Uma transformed into Mother Kali, which is a brutal and fierce incarnation. She is worshipped here with reverence and regarded as the protector of the town Gokarna.

The temple is one kilometer off from Gokarna at the Mahabaleshwar complex and provides Gokarna's most robust identities. The temple enjoys a striking presence with the associated legends and mythology.

The statue depicts Goddess in a furious mode with huge eyes and lethal weapons in hands. The humble built structure features two ferocious lions and two warriors on both sides of the main entrance gate.

People throng to Bhadrakali Temple on the back of belief that mother Kali listens and allays her devotees' pain and grief. Friday holds special significance here as the day of all Goddesses. On this particular occasion, devotees perform the prayer, offer flowers, and give away Prasad for overall well-being.

History of Bhadrakali Temple

The temple is steeped in history for mystical events linked with the formation of the temple. Various tales are associated with the construction of the temple. As per mythology, Ravana discarded Goddess Uma, and then she remained indoors at the behest of Lord Vishnu. This adobe transformed into a temple.

Another story doing the rounds about the temple recounts that trinity Gods (Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh) created Goddess to slay a powerful demon Vetrasur. The demon was tormenting the world, and ultimately the Goddess killed him. In the aftermath, Lord Shiva beseeched Kali to protect Gokarna and its people. From then on, the deity is a part of the temple.

Sri Bhadrakali Temple is dedicated to the Goddess Uma, is a popular religious mandir in Gokarna. The legends state that the Goddess was requested by Lord Cishnuto reside in this temple after she was abandoned by Ravana. Another legend says: When the all-powerful demon called Vetrasur conquered the three lokas, the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva devised a strategy to defeat him. They created a feminine warrior called Durge. Various gods gifted her with special powers to fight Vetrasur. After she conquered the demon, Lord Shiva re-christened her as Bhadrakali and sent her to Gokarna as a protector of the town. At the gate of the temple, statues of two lions and two warriors depict the power of goddess Bhadrakali. The statue of the goddess is seen in her ferocious avatar with big eyes, teeth and four hands holding weapons. This temple of Bhadrakali stands tall at the entrance of Gokarna, within walking distance from the town centre and opposite Shree Shankara Narayan Temple.

The temple itself is lovely, but the priests are very disconnected and mechanical. Asking for the money to be put in advance is probably precautionary, which was fine, and fixing a sum is fine too, but to be completely disconnected from the process was disappointing. They were reluctant to do the basic things that were to be done after a ritual. All in all a good temple to visit, if not wanting to do any specific rituals.

About Bhadrakali Temple: The Bhadrakali temple was built in honor of Goddess Uma who turned into Mother Kali. Her incarnation as the fierce and brutal is worshipped here with much devotion because she is considered as the protector of the silent town of Gokarna. The presence of the Bhadrakali temple is considered to be a significant part of the town primarily because of the various tales attached to the formation of the temple. It is surely one of the strongest identities of Gokarna. The temple is a part of the MAHABALESHWAR complex and is located about 1 km away from Gokarna. Over the years Bhadrakali Temple has gained the position of a temple where people plan and go because people believe that mother Kali listens to all. The temple is a humble built structure and its entrance has 2 ferocious lions and two warriors on either side of the main gate. The statue of the Goddess depicts Kali in a livid mode with huge eyes staring out in anger and with weapons in one hand. Mythological beliefs point out that the main reason for the existence of the temple was because Goddess Uma was discarded by Ravana and Lord Vishnu instructed her to remain indoors. This later took the form of a temple.
