This lake is beautifully covered by the bed of wildflowers. Chandra Taal lake is also named as “The Moon Lake”, located at an altitude of 14,100 feet in northern areas of Himachal Pradesh. This lake is about 2.5 km wide and is the source of Chandra river that merges into the Bhaga river forming into Chandrabhaga River. As per the Hindu Mythology, Lord Indra took his eldest brother, Yudhishtra in his chariot to heaven.

How to Reach

  • By Car / Taxi : There are multiple ways to reach this destination, the convenience of all is to hire a car from the local vendor of the town in Manali which is close to 140 km.
  • By Trekking : Traveling by road is preferred by most of the people and they ride about 250 km, which will take around 12 hours to reach Chandra Taal from Mandi. Once you are there, the distance to the lake is about 12.5 km and the remaining distance can be covered by trekking for 1.5 km from the parking area to the Moon Lake.
  • By Bus : Another option is to take a bus ride, that you might want to consider. It takes a tour from Kaza early morning and drops you at Batal, which is just 15 km away from Chandra Taal Lake. Once you are there, either hire a taxi or enjoy the trek upwards through the beautiful valleys.
  • By Flight : There is very little connectivity to the airports because of being smaller in size, however, the nearest is Bhuntar airport which is 180 km from Chandratal lake; another is 375 km away in Shimla.

  • Trekking: Enthusiasts who love to adventure would certainly love the famous trek that starts from Batal - Chandratal Lake to Baralacha Pass trek. Trek lovers can experience and explore the undiscovered valleys, monasteries, and cool forest with the view of majestic mountains and exquisite lake. This lake can be reached by walking from Batal and Kunzun pass. You can cover the distance from Kunzun pass to Chandra Taal in approximately 2 to 3 hours.
  • Camping: You can rent and buy tents if you are interested to stay overnight in the camps amidst the luscious green valleys of the mountain ranges and alongside the lake. Sleeping mats are also available for the lakeside camping and bonfire night.
  • Ancient Spiritual Places: On your way, you can take a look at the mysterious old medieval buildings and some of the hilly style temples to name a few; a dedicated Lord Shiva temple of Gowri Shankar Castle Fort, Tripura Sundari Temple.
  • Other conveyance options - The trip to Chandrataal lake begins from Patlikuhl, where you are driven to Naggar by a jeep safari which is at a distance of 5 kilometers. You may also want to take two/four-wheeler which is now accessible to travelers, with accessibility to park vehicles at a parking lot just 2 kilometers from the lake. 
  • Art Gallery: Before you end your trip and head to your resort, it is a must-visit to the famous Roerich art gallery.
