Wanting to take a tour and explore the historic site of Dharamshala, then visit Holy Dalai Lama Temple. The most renowned Buddhist temple in McLeod Ganj, also known as Tsuglakhang Temple. This temple is considered to be an essential pilgrimage spot with majestic statues of Buddha, gilded statue of Shakyamuni with small stupas and shrines all over the place.

The temple is located at a walk down the distance from the main center of the town. The most important feature of this temple is beauty and peace that you will find everywhere and the temple is decorated with colorful flags. The residence of the Dalai Lama is also centered near the temple.

Dalai Lama’s Temple is encircled by devotees who enchant prayers, perform long meditation trail, and enchant buddha relics. This is a place where you can get lost in the positivity of the surroundings and you can spend as much time as you want. This place is commonly made for spiritual duties and when you enter the temple you will see people praying by chanting prayer beads and wheels. Travelers also join the prayers performed by the Lamas, they can spin and touch the wheel and take it inside the monument. 

You will see that monks are in red and yellow attire walking around, people who visit this holy place also walk around the statue in a clockwise direction. They meditate in a large hall. The best part about this temple is that it will always look beautiful throughout the year.

How to Reach

  • By Roadways : The closest bus station is Dharamshala, and the local bus stop is McLeod Ganj. The temple is located at a walkable distance from the bus stand and other districts are also accessible. If you like to see the scenery of hills and greenery then travel by road, once you reach mall road, you can either take an auto that charges around INR 130-150 or hire a local taxi costing INR 250.
  • By Train : Railway connectivity is very limited to this location, thus, the closest rail station is Jalandhar City Railway Station and the local train station nearby is Nagrota Railway Station which has very few connectivities.

Dalai Lama’s Preaching-

Enjoy listening to Dalai Lama’s preaching, you can even listen through radio. The preaching is narrated in Tibetan language and it is heaven to ears.

Library-

Get engrossed in the large library built inside the temple. The book readers would love this place, it has a reading area with a huge collection of books.

Museum-

Inside the temple complex, you will also find a museum that holds Dalai Lama’s photograms, explains Tibetan culture, and about people who have sacrificed their lives. It is made at the entry gate and the museum also plays a video about their culture. The museum also has pictures that show Dalai Lama’s escape from Tibet.

Meditation center-

Stay inside the temple as long as you want. This indeed is the best place for pilgrims to meditate. People meditate here with prayer beads which you can purchase from the stalls nearby. If you are keen to learn about meditation, you can speak with the Lamas and learn the rituals from them inside the temple complex.

Street Market-

There are a variety of shops that are selling Tibetan books, t-shirts and you can even buy prayer beads from the shops outside. 

Eating Outlets-

You will find a plethora of eating joints outside the complex and street stalls are selling a variety of snacks that you can relish upon.

Clean, well maintained temple. The serenity of the place relaxes your body and soul. Actual temple visit is not possible right now due to covid concerns but that will change soon.

Namgyal Monastery (Tibetan: རྣམ་རྒྱལ།, Wylie: rnam rgyal) (also often referred to as "Dalai Lama's Temple") is currently located in Mcleod Ganj, Dharamsala, India. It is the personal monastery of the 14th Dalai Lama. Another name for this temple-complex is Namgyal Tantric College. This monastery's key role is to assist with rituals involving the Dalai Lama of Tibet. Its main tantric practices reportedly include those of Kalachakra, Yamantaka, Chakrasamvara, Guhyasamaja, and Vajrakilaya.

To be honest, we visited this place with high expectations. This temple is not that grand as it seems. But we got to know that there is another temple nearby which is must visiting. (I don't know the name)

A lovely place to visit when you are in McLeodganj. A serene and enchanting place that makes you free of all worldly pleasures and stresses and makes you involved in the atmosphere. An overall peaceful atmosphere.
