Overview

The word 'Sukhothai' means 'dawn of happiness’; the old city of Sukhothai was the metropolitan city of Thailand. Gradually, the city turned into ruins but has become a world's remarkable heritage site and an important spot for tourism also. In the top-notch of the city, there is a small bounded area which is the origin of the area named 'Wat Phra Pai Luang'.

Sukhothai's central zone contained 21 temples within it. The most important one is the 'Wat Mahatat', a royal temple and spiritual center also. You would have seen numerous Buddha statues, carvings, monuments, etc in every temple. If you want to get the topmost experience in Thailand, don’t forget to visit here.

Why is it famous?

The city is like a mirror of the 13th century of Thailand. A lot of manuscripts, monuments, statues, and sculptures were found here. Sukhothai is the birthplace of 'Thai art', and the UNESCO heritage site with incredible ruins out of the country. And some temples make the city famous. An impression can be found somewhere in modern Thailand belongs to the Sukhothai kingdom.

Though the kingdom stayed for a short period, Sukhothai is marked for the Golden era for sculpture - art and architecture. The great king Ram Kamphaeng established a Ceylonese school for Theravada Buddhism. He also set up an administrative system and prepared manuscripts of his kingdom.

Tourists Attractions

As usual, you can visit those temples. You can fully explore the historical park full of temples, monuments, sculptures, and a lot of knowledge.

Historical Park is divided into three main areas-

The northern zonewestern zone, and central zone. The entry fees of each zone are 100 baht and 10 baht for bicycle rent. One can buy combo tickets also.

Central zone

It is the main attraction of the area. Numerous historical sites are here. Almost 60 per cent of temples and sculptures are in the central zone.

  • Wat Mahatat- That is the most famous temple in Sukhothai kingdom, located in the central zone. It has the large ground premises and also has a large number of stupas and prangs (Khmer originated conical tower)
  • Wat Si Sawa- Most of the people say that it is a miniature version of Angkor Wat. It has 3 big prangs with well detailing.
  • Wat Chana Songkhram- This one is another incredible temple in Thailand which is the most photographed temple. It has a large Buddha statue inside it named 'PhraAchana' which means He who is not frightened.
  • Wat Sa Si- This temple is situated on an island having a white sitting buddha. Every sculpture is as detailed as you can't imagine in the 13th century. And you will get to see the variety of different styles in sculpture.

Northern zone

From the central zone you can easily reach here in a few minutes. A few distances between the central and northern zone. Though each zone requires different tickets to enter, you can enter the northern zone by showing them the first ticket. They will let you in.

  • Wat Si Chum- It is the busiest place in the park. A tall Buddha statue with a golden finger has seen here. You can see also one attraction like Wat PhraPhaiLuang Temple.

Western zone

It is the farthest from the two others. The western zone contains fewer ruins than two others. But you can have a joyful bicycle ride between the gap. Note that the parking area doesn’t have any shops or cafes. So, carry water and drink often.

  • Wat SaphanHin- If you want to get the top view of the area, you can trek here. Steeping stones are there that can help you to get the top view. There is also some attraction like Wat Chang Rob and Wat Khao Phra Bat Noi.

Places To Eat

Within one kilometre you can get many restaurants or cafes like Say hi cafe, Thammada cafe, Old city landmark, Thara restaurant, Kacha, etc. But as per your requirement, you can go to different places.

And before check-in, you should always check the customer rating for a better experience. Thammada cafe is the highest-rated restaurant so I would suggest you eat here. And don't forget to get the watermelon shake from the Sukhothai market, it is one of the special things in Sukhothai. And the other best thing is the Thai dishes.

Where to stay?

As it is a tourist spot, there is no scarcity of hotels. But you should book a hotel after planning for Sukhothai. And there is also a rating factor; you should always check customer ratings before you book the hotel. A lot of hotels are there in Sukhothai city and you can get the hotel as per your longing.

If possible, you can check in old Sukhothai because it is so close to the central zone of the park. And in that particular area, you can easily get hotels and guest houses. There are also bicycle hire shops, restaurants, and cafes.
